Archive for June, 2010

We grabbed a shady seat at the Cooper-Young Farmers Market last weekend to listen to the lovely Holly Cole & the Memphis Dawls.

Cellist Jana Misener (she also plays with Giant Bear and Sultana) was fresh and cool in a long white cotton sundress. Her carved coral earrings and floral-and-feather hair fascinator caught our eye before she even took the stage.

I think we’re officially obsessed with hats. Unsurprisingly, we loved Amy’s. The fresh flowers from the market were a nice touch.

more Levitt love

Flannery told us she stole her hair-tie from a dress and that she made her awesome birdhouse necklace. For more of her handmade jewelry, go here.

The graphic stripes of Scott’s hat caught our eye from across the lawn.

lovin’ the Levitt Shell

The Levitt Shell is one of our favorite things about Memphis. Great sounds, grassy knoll, byo refreshments. All this for the low, low cost of free (but donations are always appreciated)! The Spring Concert Series wrapped up last weekend, and we found a few stylish and well-known Memphians at the Betty Harris and the Believers show on Friday.

Local politician and lawyer Carol Chumney came prepared for rain and shine with a bright umbrella, breezy sundress, and rad cowgirl boots.

We were drawn to John Gary Williams’ sharp, all white ensemble. What fun to learn that he sang lead in the 60s Stax band the Mad Lads!

We found some nice-looking folks at the Dixon Gallery & Garden’s Art After Dark event, featuring the sculpture of Iris Harkavy and the music of Eden Brent.

Louise and Freddie looked so fresh and happy, despite the humidity and pesky mosquitoes!

Monica  mentioned that her multiple necklaces were inspired by a magazine article. The necklaces, plus a printed bag and a great smile, really spruce up a black knit sundress.

We were lucky enough to unknowingly single out the artist herself, Iris Harkavy, impressed by her serpentine accessories and glittery neutrals.

outdoor rock-n-roll

Denim + black shirt = Memphis rock show uniform. It’s fun to watch how different girls (and guys) can make the same pieces look so different. We found these ladies at the free Bryan Hartley show at Shangri La Records.

Cool confidence, polished bangles, and worn boots sold Eileen’s outfit.

Trisha pulled together a ladylike take on rock-n-roll style.

Jessica is the drummer for Bryan Hartley. Everything about her look, from the belt buckle to her smile, just seemed completely authentic.

Jessica described herself as having a “free spirit style.” She chose this outfit so she could stay comfortable and modest for her job, since she works with teenagers.

We are impressed with anyone who can pull off a salmon jean. And Memphians sure do know how to accessorize! The black suede loafers, big dangly earrings, and stacked bracelets take Jessica’s simple jeans and t-shirt outfit up several  notches.

Elaina’s said her style icon is Katharine Hepburn, partly due to the fact that “She never wore dresses. She was always wearing pants.”

We love Elaina’s rich color combo here. And the way she pulls off the black frame glasses is very K. Hepburn-esque.

Burke’s Book Store celebrated their 135th (wow!) anniversary at Cooper-Young Nite Out last week with champagne, cake, and balloons.

Co-owner Cheryl was dressed classically and comfortably in jeans and a button down, with amazing, one-of-a-kind accessories, including her cool tortoise shell frames.

If it’s not clear from the whole 135 years thing, we’d just like to point out that Burke’s is a Memphis institution. A lovely, comfortable, well-staffed, book lover’s haven.

Burke’s carries new books, and specializes in rare and used books. We cannot help but be charmed by these hand-wrapped special orders. Now those are some stylish books!

Finally, we appreciate that Burke’s Books is set up for you to preview the merchandise. Every aisle has a chair for you.

HAPPY B-DAY, Burke’s! We’re hoping for at least 135 more.
